A common plant found in the Middle East but that of the seed is the
Jewel of the Nile.
As foretold by the Prophet Muhammad pbuh, that Habatus'Sauda or Black
Seed is the cure of all ailments except death, this simple seed is
commonly used by those from the Middle East and Eastern Europe
including of Egyptians, Israelis and Arabs alike for most of their
herbal remedies. The scientific name Nigella Sativa or what the Malays
called it as Jintan Hitam (Black Cumin) is used in the Indian cooking
as Black Onion Seeds such as in Peshawari naan and other foods. Though
the smell is stingy and pungent with a nasty after breath should it be
consumed naturally, many research into the plant have found that the
extract deemed to be full of nutrients.
Though the ancient variety Carum bulbocastanum are quite a rarity, the
Nigella Sativa are commonly substituted and the cousin Carum carvi are
usually used in cooking spices. Though they are in the Cumin are from
Apiaceae (Umbelliferae) family, the black cumin is not. The core of
the essence contains dithymoquinone, melanthin, nigilline,
damascenine, and tannins though in huge quantities, they may become
toxins. So as in any other foods, anything taken must be in
moderation.
